چکیده

Abstract Crop intensification is required to meet the food demands of an increasing population. This paper presents data from three paired scaling-up initiatives compare benefits landscape-based interventions over individual plot-level using evidence generated in Indian semi-arid tropics. A range soil and water conservation were implemented a decentralized manner following approach. The approach focused only on balanced fertilizer application improved crop cultivars while primarily addressed moisture availability, which was key reducing risks failure besides aiding productivity gain enhanced land water-use efficiency. These have additionally harvested 50–150 mm surface runoff facilitated groundwater recharge 550–800 rainfall zones. Individual also yield significantly control plots. However, not achieved due limited availability. Landscape-based produced 100%–300% higher production per year, greater income generation (>100%), productivity. found be beneficial terms loss by 75%–90% improving base flow availability 20–75 d year compared untreated watersheds. With increased fallow lands respective watersheds been utilized for cultivation, thereby enhancing intensification. findings study provide critical insights into design approaches suitable projects order both create impact target United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable intensification of crop production

Relevance Concerns about the environmental impact of farming has increasingly been the focus of discussions in the EU. Croplands, a primary land use in Europe, have a significant impact on the environment (soil, water bodies, global climate, local biodiversity and human health). The use of fertilisers and pesticides associated with conventional farming may lead to pollution and/or climate chang...

Soil Management for Sustainable Intensification: Some Guidelines

One of the fundamental lessons learned through the past half century of agricultural research is that there are no “one size fits all” best management practices. The interaction of different soils with different cultures in different climates results in the need for unique approaches to sustainable agricultural systems in each situation. The transition to systems that are both sustainable and s...

Sustainable crop intensification through surface water irrigation in Bangladesh? A geospatial assessment of landscape-scale production potential

Changing dietary preferences and population growth in South Asia have resulted in increasing demand for wheat and maize, along side high and sustained demand for rice. In the highly productive northwestern Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia, farmers utilize groundwater irrigation to assure that at least two of these crops are sequenced on the same field within the same year. Such double croppin...

GMOs: A Good but Battered Means for Sustainable Production Intensification

FAO promotes Sustainable Production Intensification (SPI), which consists of a technology menu for optimizing crop production per unit area, taking into consideration the range of sustainability aspects including potential and/or real social, political, economic and environmental impacts. The author suggests that Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) cropping is not only well aligned to SPI but a...

Outgrower schemes: advantages of different business models for sustainable crop intensification

Contract farming has been subject to intense debates regarding its role in development. Opponents argue that large agribusiness companies generally exploit the low labour costs of smallholders and transfer production risks to farmers, while smallholder farmers are often excluded from contract farming schemes. This means that such schemes result in greater income inequality and social tensions i...
